The Historical Percussion Course will consist of 4 days where will be studied the origin of different percussion instruments (adufe, def, pandero, tambourine, darbuka, drum, timpani, castanets, cymbals, bells, etc.) and why and how they are used in the interpretation of ancient music.
During the development of the percussion course, the particular techniques of each of these instruments will be worked on. The music studied will be from the 13th to the 18th centuries, focusing especially on the Cantigas de Alfonso X el Sabio, the instrumental dances of the Italian Trecento, the Ensaladas of the Spanish Renaissance, the castanets rhythms of the Spanish Baroque and the solo and orchestral repertoire for Baroque timpani.
Contents of the course
Technique of each instrument focused on different pieces.
Enrollment in the full course gives acces to 30 hours of master classes, group and individual, and participation in the rest of the scheduled activities: FestRibalt concerts, tourist visits, among others.
Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of achievement.

Maarten van der Valk
Professional and complete percussionist. As a timpanist, percussionist and drummer, he has been active in Dutch musical life for more than 25 years. He in turn, he has held concerts in Europe, North and South America and Japan. Until 2022, his permanent orchestra was the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, founded and conducted by Frans Brüggen. As a timpanist, Maarten has played with this orchestra on all Dutch and world stages since 1984 and they have around 65 CDs to his name. In addition, he has collaborated with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Freiburger Barockorchester, Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Europa Galante or the Barcelona and National Symphony Orchestra of Catalonia, among others.
Pedro Estevan
Born in Sax (Alicante, Spain) in 1951, he studied percussion at the Conservatory of Music in Madrid and in France (Aix-en-Provence) where he studied contemporary percussion with Sylvio Gualda, and African percussion with the Senegalese teacher Doudou Ndiaye Rose. He has also studied hand-drum technique with Glen Vélez. Founding member of the Orquesta de las nubes and of the Madrid Percussion Group, he has collaborated with the National Orchestra of Spain, RTVE, the Madrid Symphony, Gulbenkian of Lisbon, and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, as well as with the groups Koan, Sacqueboutiers de Toulouse, Paul Winter Consorte, Camerata Iberia, Ensemble Barroco de Limoges, The Harp Consort, Mudéjar and Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, among others.
An eclectic musician, Pedro Estevan is especially dedicated to early music with Hespèrion XXI, Le Concert des Nations, Laberintos Ingeniosos and contemporary music with Rarafonía. He has composed music for Alesio de Ignacio García May and for La Gran Sultana de Cervantes directed by Adolfo Marsillach. As a soloist, he has performed with the Spanish National Chamber Orchestra and the Queen Sofía Orchestra, and has taken part in various theatrical productions by Lluís Pasqual, Núria Espert and Adolfo Marsillach. He has been musical director of the show El Caballero de Olmedo by Lope de Vega, directed by Lluís Pasqual. Pedro Estevan has participated in more than 100 albums, among which his own works Nocturnos y Alevosias and El aroma del Tiempo stand out. He is a professor of historical percussion at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.
Pere Olivé
Percussionist who collects the freshness of the oral musical tradition of Catalonia and the academicism of classical percussion. He graduated in historical percussion and traditional Catalan music from the ESMUC, where he has studied with Pedro Estevan. He later expanded his training at the Schola Cantorum Basilensis (Switzerland). Regarding his professional activity, he combines teaching as a repertoire percussionist in the traditional music department of the ESMUC with his life as a performer, forming part of the ensembles Quintet Montsant, Tañer, Cobla Catalana dels Sons Essencials, So Nat Grallers de Tarragona and Lucentum XVI. He regularly collaborates with internationally renowned ensembles such as Le Poème harmonique, Ensemble Correspondences, La Grande Chapelle, Vespres d’Arnadí, Forma Antiqva, Hespèrion XXI and Le Concert des Nations. He has recorded about thirty CDs ranging from traditional and ancient music to contemporary music.
Onofre Serer
Born in Quart de Poblet (València, Spain). He began his musical studies at the L’Amistat Musical Group, specializing in percussion and later in piano. He completed the Professional Music Degree at the «Mestre Molins» Professional Music Conservatory in Quart de Poblet with Professor Ismael Cortés, obtaining the Extraordinary Honor Professional Degree Award. He finished his percussion studies with distinction at the «Salvador Seguí» Superior Conservatory in Castelló with Professor Lluís Marzal. He has taken classical and orchestral percussion courses with Manel Ramada, José Luis González, Raúl Benavent, Rafa Mas, Julien Bourgeois, Philippe Spiesser, Rafa Mayans, Vicent Vinaixa, Grati Murcia, Javier Azanza and Nick Woud.
He completed the Master’s Degree in Musicology, Musical Education and Interpretation of Early Music at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) under the tutelage of Pedro Estevan. He has attended frame drum courses and classes with Glen Velez, Yshai Afterman, Zohar Fresco and Diego López; of Indian music with Keyvan Chemirani, of baroque timpani with Ben Hoffnung and Maarten van der Valk; and oriental percussion and castanets with Pere Olivé. In 2019 he founded the early music group «La Regalada», focused on the recovery of music from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century for natural trumpets, baroque timpani and organ. He has collaborated with La Grande Chapelle, Concerto 1700, Le Tendre Amour, Capella de Ministrers, Música Trobada, Lucentum XVI, Amystis, Orquesta Montsalvat, Harmonia del Parnàs, performing concerts at the Palau de la Música in Valencia, Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori in Barcelona, Arsenal in Metz, Volkstheater and Konzerthaus in Vienna and the Berliner Philharmonie in Berlin. He has a PhD of Art from the Polytechnic University of València.
